Introducing Severed Currents – A Retro Escape Room Game

Hi everyone, and welcome to the first devlog for my game, Severed Currents!
This project is a first-person, PSX-style escape room set in an abandoned underwater facility. I’m aiming to create an experience that feels both immersive and unsettling, with visuals inspired by the look and feel of classic retro games.
About Severed Currents
In Severed Currents, you’re alone in a small, eerie room with no memory of how you got there. The player’s goal is to search for clues and items to unlock the door, only to discover a bigger mystery. I want to make the gameplay feel slow and deliberate, so exploring the room and piecing together what’s happened will be part of the experience.
To keep things interesting, I’m planning a series of small puzzles instead of a single key find. I’m also thinking about adding random spawn locations for some objects to make each playthrough feel unique. This way, every time you play, there’s a slightly different experience, encouraging exploration.
Why Retro?
I chose a retro, PSX-style look not only because I love the aesthetic, but also because it matches the tone of the game. The low-poly visuals help create a nostalgic and eerie atmosphere, which is perfect for the isolated, underwater setting of Severed Currents. Plus, it’s a practical choice for a solo developer like me!
What’s Next?
My next steps are building out the layout of the first room, setting up slow, methodical movement, and getting the first set of puzzle mechanics up and running. I’ll be sharing updates as I go, so check back if you want to follow the project’s progress.
